There is power in a union

There is power in a union

‘But you dont need to be a member just to get the new pay?’

No, you don’t.

You can leave it to others

To pay their union dues

to fund the campaigns

to fund the negotiators

to fund the organisers

You can leave it to others

To sign petitions

To write letters

To meet

To march

To strike

You can leave it to others

To be informed

To make sure your employer follows the award

To ask for the back pay

To make sure breaks and entitlements are correct

To ring the union to check

then tell you or your boss the right answer

You can leave it to others

To earn respect for our profession

To demand that society values young children

As worthy of being taught by real teachers

Who are paid and treated like real teachers

Who are not worked into the ground

Who don’t have every spark of creativity scared out of them

Who are confident

And committed to their work

And the children they teach

You can leave it to others

You will still get your payrise

But you won’t get my respect
